What are the strengths of this product?

Excellent customer services. The team are very quick to respond to issues and get the resolved without having to much impact on your timescales for producing reports.

What are the weaknesses of this product?

The tool can sometimes be slow and non-responsive. When changing the manufacturer in the tool it then changes the entry to Created Manually which has implications on our reports.

What features would you add if you had the choice?

Would like to see where the data comes from on the Software Usage tab like on the device tab; e.g. SCCM, Discovery, etc

Vendor response

Many thanks for the review Lauren, in versions 10.2 & 10.3 we made some significant performance enhancements for the Enterprise size customer so you will benefit from these when you upgrade. In 10.3 you will indeed see the data origin on the software usage tab.

What are the strengths of this product?

Easy to install

What are the weaknesses of this product?

No Linux RedHat dictionary
Not possible to track down to user level, e.g. Mutiple installs of User based products accross mutiple devices.

What features would you add if you had the choice?

Tracking of user products with mutiple installs on mutiple devices.

Vendor response

Thank you for the review, we notice that you are reviewing a fairly old release of LM- whilst it is possible to do this to a degree in 10.x (we have a user specific workspace to capture users, their deployments/subscriptions and so on) LM11- due for release in the new year- has been developed to further address this critical area where all License Management systems struggle, linking users to assets and building important relationships in order that user based licensing and rights afforded by licenses such as O365, Creative cloud, MSDN and so on can be automated.

What are the strengths of this product?

Customer service is always good. The tool provides some great options for reporting.

What are the weaknesses of this product?

There is often a need to change manufacturers due to merges or buy outs. Although you can link the manufacturers within the dictionary, Changing the manufacturer within the Software section causes problems. This makes cleansing and reporting much more manual.

What features would you add if you had the choice?

A Type of device column in the software tab. The bookmark tick box can sometimes be confusing so perhaps a drop down choice.

What are the strengths of this product?

The logic that has been designed for managing licence entitlement.
For example: it's remarkably straight forward to associate Maintenance to an underlying Licence.
Total control of licences - I haven't had that in other Licence Manager tools I've used.

What are the weaknesses of this product?

Using it for Windows 10 Migration, for example, isn't actually sensible. It gives you an idea of what machines need upgrading, from a Hardware Specification perspective, but if you want to use it for understanding everything that's present on every device, this isn't so useful.
All of the information is there within its Data Cleanse section, but the reporting content isn't strong enough.... yet.

What features would you add if you had the choice?

The ability to report from Data Cleanse. License Dashboard has recently introduced an excellent reporting feature using QlikView technology for License Manager.
The same for Data Cleanse would be very powerful.

What are the strengths of this product?

Easy to install and get started to use.

What are the weaknesses of this product?

If you do not have a support agreement covering the supplier to do all the work within the tool, it is to much manual handling to get the good affect using the tool.

What features would you add if you had the choice?

Recognitions features in general.

Vendor response

Many thanks for the feedback- I notice your comments relate to quite an old version 5.8, we are now on Version 10.3 and as you would expect there have been many improvements particularly over the import of discovery data which can now be done with zero touch from the end user. Please feel free to get in touch and we would be happy to share these and many other improvements and enhancements.

What are the strengths of this product?

Proof of entitlement recording . Upgrade/downgrade rights recording.

What are the weaknesses of this product?

No agent. No discovery and metering. Data is not real-time and is only from a periodic data cleanse. Unintuitive when reporting new-found software. Support is somewhat lacking unless the managed service is purchased.

What features would you add if you had the choice?

Discovery and metering Improved package matching. Real-time results. Ease of merging business units with devices and licenses.

Vendor response

Many thanks for the feedback- I notice your review relates to 5.9, our latest release is 10.3 which now allows for real time data from any discovery data source. Our Dashboard Discovery tool is available as an option should our end users not have their own or have gaps in its coverage. Further enhancements have been made to the Data Cleanse area for end users who wish to identify their own unmatched software packages or titles and we also offer a complete software recognition service for those that do not. Please feel free to get in touch for a demo to see any of these or our other enhancements.

What are the strengths of this product?

Value for the money; this tool was able to meet our SAM needs for less than it's competitors. Ability to pull data from various sources, License Intelligence.

What are the weaknesses of this product?

Inventory reporting: However, it is a SAM tool and I don't have experience with how it compares to other SAM tools.

What features would you add if you had the choice?

Additional reporting features. Although it is a SAM tool, we use it to aggregate multiple inventory tools. It would be nice to have some of the same reporting features that are available in the inventory tools in License Manager. That way we could run one report against multiple tools. I am able to run inventory reports, however, additional reporting features would be nice.

Vendor response

Many thanks for your feedback. The shipped reports are not exhaustive and it is very easy for us to create additional bespoke reports for you based upon your need, please mail support@licensedashboard.com with your request and we will send you a zip file of your report that can be imported into your LM and then selected in the reports workspace.

What are the strengths of this product?

What are the weaknesses of this product?

Inability to identify editions. Very complicated to manage unidentifed MSI and Exe info.

What features would you add if you had the choice?

The ability to add attachments to Notes. Identifying editions of applications.

Vendor response

Many thanks for your feedback- I note you are reviewing quite an old version- 5.8, we are now on 10.3 where previously complex tasks have been greatly simplified and are now zero touch to the end user. The recognition of certain editions (SQL, Exchange) do prove challenging to some clients’ own existing discovery systems but as we cannot effect other vendors’ systems we help clients overcome their issue with the deployment of FOC tools or utilities of our own. Please feel free to get in touch for a demo

Elevator pitch

License Dashboard is a competitive offering forged at the rock face of everyday SAM and implementation in the real world. We applaud the audit centric approach, audit level scrutiny for audit ready results. This is a straightforward and modern solution, suitable for small organizations, large enterprises, partners or delivered as a managed service.

Strengths

  • All round strong and modern SAM platform
  • Pragmatic, customer centered approach
  • Great management of virtualization and visualizing relationships
  • Unique approach to managing multiple data sources whilst maintaining accuracy
  • Easy to use reporting platform for broader IT teams

Weaknesses

  • No what-if analysis, scenario modeling
  • No AppStore or asset request system
  • No bi-directional integration with systems management tools to take action on SAM decisions

We reviewed License Dashboard back in 2012, when we stated that it was ‘the product the license auditor built’. License Dashboard continues to be a competitive offering, growing from a product focused on primarily Microsoft true up, to an all round SAM platform. It is evident when reviewing License Dashboard that is has been developed as a response to License Management work at the rock face, and this ethos continues in 10.2.

It is also clear that License Dashboard are flexible to customer requirements with on-premise, cloud, subscription and cloud options available as well as managed service options for addressing specific customer requirements. The team has completed over 1,000 projects and has in excess of 400 customers, 300 of which are on current maintenance.

Their offering has expanded from being a license management tool to a full SAM platform including Discovery, License Manager, Data Navigator (A smart aggregation and transfer platform for maintaining accurate asset data from multiple data sources) and License Dashboard Portal. The Microsoft ELP centric solution has expanded to include coverage for Oracle, IBM and SAP, which naturally broadens the appeal of License Dashboard into much larger accounts.

During our previous review we noted that License Dashboard does a very good job of not only uploading a Microsoft MLS but also scrutinizing it for errors. The whole License Dashboard has this approach, almost being skeptical of every data source until it has been compared, scrutinized and validated. To assume the worst-case scenario from a license entitlement point of view until proven otherwise using recognized data and techniques. We love this approach and it is a very admirable approach to world class SAM.

The Data Navigator is born from delivering managed services to customer whereby the team needed a robust solution for aggregating multiple customer data sources and building an on-going accurate picture. Data Navigator takes data from lots of different inventory or enterprise wide sources, cleanses them and centralizes them for use with SAM. You can then look to send this cleansed data of to other systems such as service desks.

For the core License Manager product, first of all we were impressed with the notifications board. Again, returning to the auditor centric approach and being skeptical of data, customers are presented with tiles of notifications of discrepancies that need investigations. It’s not new to see notifications dashboards in SAM tools, but it is new to see it at this level of detail with obsessive pursuit of accuracy. The tree map and heat maps of license manager were also novel, ideal for presenting risk and summaries to senior management teams.

Another approach we admired from the License Dashboard development team is to actively avoid the use of Excel. ITAM Review readers often spend huge amounts on SAM tool technology, only to fall back to exporting to Excel for final manipulation and reporting. Whilst we’re certain that Excel is still required now and again, the team strives to build a tool where Excel is not needed and all manipulation can be done within the tool itself.

The License Dashboard approach to managing virtual relationships is worth investigation to any organization with large investments in virtualization and struggling with managing license coverage in dynamic environments. License Manager has a strong approach to visualizing and managing license entitlement coverage across clusters and datacenters

License Dashboard Portal is web-based access to dynamic reports built from License Manager data. A slick management layer on top of technical SAM data, License Dashboard Portal is delivered via a partnership with the BI firm Qlik technology. Non-SAM stakeholders can login, setup with custom personas, to access SAM reports on demand. Personas might include CIO, SAM Manager, Procurement Officer, Finance and so on. Reporting and dashboards can be customized for these different audiences, who clearly have different requirements and demands of SAM data. This level of on demand reporting would also be powerful for License Dashboard partners delivering SAM managed services who can deliver 24/7/365 access to intelligence without overwhelming the customer with configuration and licensing information.
