What are the strengths of this product?

Too many things to say in this small space, but let me pick some highlights. Finally, finally, finally, a DSL with built in algorithms to manage rights for upgrade / downgrade / cross grade / capacity / sub capacity / suite, etc. This is the least managed part of SAM which can cause the most compliance risk. I no longer have to manually manage compliance requirements outside of my compliance tool. SAM experts normally have to fully understand and analyze intellectual property rights to accurately to perform software related compliance tasks. Otherwise businesses risk over spending and under/over licensing. I have waited many years for someone to listen and create a product from a SAM perspective. They are flexible, personable and their team doesn't just sell a product, they can talk the language. As a CITAM, CHAMP and CSAM, I would know if they didn't understand compliance.

What are the weaknesses of this product?

I would recommend the cloud version to others for more seamless updates, etc. With Concorde's support team the delay is only a technical limitation of an on-premise solution and not a support issue. If they also managed HW in their DSL, we wouldn't need another tool for a single source, industry standard catalog.

What features would you add if you had the choice?

I would include professional services for a minimum of one Publisher (Vendor) to speed up training for your SAM folks and to serve as a live reference point. Once organizations see the scenario modeling and ease of obtaining license position, they will be so excited they will push for more demos and additional reconciliations from your SAM team long before they have an opportunity to fully implement or learn the product !!!!

What are the strengths of this product?

We have an on-premise version because of the company's security and still have had a very positive experience using the tool. The tool is so far ahead of it competitors and the company been very open to suggestion to improve the product. The staff is very knowledgeable and we stood up the tool in a day.

What are the weaknesses of this product?

The product can be difficult for beginners but the on-line help, support and training has helped to bridge the gap.

What features would you add if you had the choice?

Information on difference licensing types and agreement and best sites to get licensing information of products. The tool is very flexible but with flexibility you add addition complexity. if the tool had a standard menu where the user can configure the tool cased on their knowledge, this is what's required, it may help it make it easier for beginners.

What are the strengths of this product?

This tool has been excellent for helping us with our IBM Sub capacity licensing. It has a great out of the box DSL which has meant we've been able to populate quickly and easily without having to create too many of our own software entries. However, the tool is flexible enough to allow you to do this. So would work well across all industry sectors in my opinion.

What are the weaknesses of this product?

I would like to see behind the scenes of the DSL, at the moment you can't interrogate this to ensure you are matching against the correct file.

What features would you add if you had the choice?

To be able to see the .exe or .dll file properties would make it perfect.

Elevator pitch

The new kid on the block, built from the ground up for modern SAM challenges. Core Control is a competitive offering with a customer centric approach and supported by strong customer satisfaction scores.

Strengths

  • Strong solution for SAM in large enterprises
  • Strong customer references and customer satisfaction scores
  • Leading the market in using ITAM data outside ITAM
  • One single clean web-based interface

Weaknesses

  • Low market penetration
  • No SAP User Management
  • No App Store / shopping cart offering

Core Control from Concorde Solutions is an entirely web-based SAM solution for large and complex enterprises. Around 90% of Concorde’s customers consume Core Control as Software as a Service and 10% on premise.

New users to the system are greeted with an easy to use web based console with introductory videos and how-to materials to help make best use of the system. As with most modern SAM tools, Core Control includes widgets and tiles that can be customized to suit the SAM information requirements of particular users. We particularly liked the CIO dashboards, presenting commercially relevant information in a single view. There are similarly concise views for SAM and entitlement.

Core Control has been good at data import and managing data from various sources for a number of years, but they've managed to improve that even further with semi-automated import and good management of different data sources, a critical tool in modern heterogeneous IT environments. A key advantage of Core Control in comparison to it’s competitors in not only is it web-based, but unlike some of it’s Enterprise SAM competitors, it is all within a single pane of glass, a single login. It does not require multiple clients, logins and tabs to open.

It is common for IT Management tools to visualize physical device, virtualization or service relationships but Core Control also visualizes license entitlement relationships. It’s almost like a CMDB for license liability; you can see first hand the relationships between each piece of entitlement. The relationships in layers of upgrades and decades of purchase history can be seen instantly.

Learning from history and peering into the future

We liked the ability to create policies within Core Control to maintain a governance view of software and hardware builds. There is versatile historical reporting to view what happened at a previous point in time as well as peering into the future to predict what might the landscape look like at a certain point in the future.

We believe that Concorde are leading the ITAM market with their scenario modeling, what-if analysis and generally using ITAM data beyond the ITAM department, it is where ITAM meets Architecture. Their scenario modeling tool is perfectly suited to architects and project managers looking to transition to new environments such as cloud or virtualization, and not just for estimating license costs but the total cost of ownership and ROI for that decision.

For example if I move my compute to Amazon, what resources am I going to need, what people am I going to need, what projects am I going to need, what Amazon specs am I going to need, and what price is that going to be, and so on and so forth. The scenario-modeling wizard takes customers through several steps to get a high-level financial impact report. Steps include the schedule, project variables, outcomes and results. It is a very good direction for ITAM and Concorde are leading the way in this regard. You are only limited by your imagination in terms of its potential uses.

Core Control is particularly suited to large, complex environments. The team has a hybrid product and service approach to implementations. They understand that many large enterprises might have had their fingers burnt with product pitches from SAM vendors that don’t materialize into financial return.

This handholding approach to customer success is supported via their 90-day quick start plan, which promises a SAM SaaS platform stood up, working and delivering an ELP for high priority software publishers within 90 days. An excellent way for a SAM team to de-risk the implementation of a SAM tool, someone holding your hand and aiming to deliver fast results is a strong offer.

Core Control is missing an App Store or automated Asset request system in comparison to it’s Enterprise SAM competitors, so customers would need to work with existing ITSM solutions to deliver that alongside Core Control with some custom integration.  Existing integrations with ITSM players include the likes of ServiceNow and LANDESK. For example widgets showing entitlement positions or rationalization opportunities can be shown within the ServiceNow console. We would also like to see Concorde offer more Hardware Asset Management features to support the full ITAM lifecycle, reducing customer’s requirement for a secondary system for HAM. Finally, Concorde do not currently offer management of SAP licensing, but this is a roadmap item to be addressed soon.

Similarly, given that Core Control is a SaaS application and they have such a competitive offering around transitioning to the cloud, it would be good to see Concorde include more capabilities around provisioning and re-harvesting cloud based software such as Amazon, Azure and SaaS apps.

We admire Concorde’s approach to SAM and believe with a few more customers and partners across the world under their belts, they're going to be a force to be reckoned with. In the meantime, it's definitely something to consider and shortlist. Great technology coupled with a great approach.
